This week we made a nice donation, through Leng Support, to 2 little schools in the Kulen Mountain Area.
This National Park is beautiful, but they’re also a number of problems. One of the bigger problems is deforestation. Despite the fact that it is a national park a lot of trees are cut or burned in favor of growing cashew nuts. Via a French NGO (called ADF) farmers are being stimulated to start alternative crops. Crops that bring more profit but ask less space. They also look for alternative ways to get an income, like small scale tourism. Often in these complex projects you end up that there’s need for a solid basic education and that is why ADF (Archaeology & Development Foundation Phnom Kulen Program) is also stimulation education in this area.
Panha Sabay donated a number of Leng sets math, funded through Leng support. Leng support means paying for a big part of a Leng-game for somebody else. You can find more information about Leng Support on our website.
We trained the teachers at these schools and showed them how they could use Leng in their lessons. Fortunately ADF has a coordinator for their school program, he can take care of the follow-up. If it is a success, we will certainly extend this donation.
Meanwhile we were able to enjoy the beautiful area, moving around on the back of a moto. Nature and Culture go hand in hand in this park. I think the pictures speak for themselves.
Afgelopen week hebben we een mooie donatie, via Leng Support, kunnen doen aan 2 schooltjes in het Kulen gebergte.
Dit nationaal park is prachtig, maar er zijn ook veel problemen. Een van de grote problemen is de ontbossing. Ondanks het feit dat het een nationaal park is wordt er veel bos gekapt en verbrand ten behoeve van de cashew-noten-teelt. Via een Franse NGO (ADF) worden boeren gestimuleerd alternatieve teelten te starten, die meer geld opbrengen en minder landoppervlakte vragen. Ook wordt er gezocht naar alternatieve inkomens-mogelijkheden, zoals kleinschalig toerisme. Vaak kom je bij dit soort complexe projecten toch weer tot de conclusie dat de basis in het onderwijs zit en zo levert ADF (Archaeology & Development Foundation Phnom Kulen Program) ook een positieve bijdrage aan het onderwijs in dit gebied.
Panha Sabay heeft op 2 schooltjes een aantal sets “Leng rekenen” gedoneerd, betaald via Leng support. Leng support betekent dat je een groot deel van een Leng-spel betaalt voor een ander. Op de website kun je er van alles over vinden.
Op die schooltjes hebben we de leerkrachten getraind hoe om te gaan met dit materiaal. Gelukkig heeft ADF een coordinator in dienst voor het schoolprogramma. Hij kan de komende tijd zorgen voor opvolging; en als het een succes is gaan we deze donatie zeker uitbreiden.
Ondertussen hebben we ook kunnen genieten van de prachtige omgeving, zittend achterop de brommer. Zowel natuur als cultuur zijn meer dan de moeite van een bezoek aan dit nationale park waard. De foto’s spreken voor zich.
