It’s Friday today and the most important thing to do today is set-up our table at the Christmas Fair at Victoria Hotel. The fair starts at 5pm so there’s time for some other activities as well……
I am usually awake around 6, but this week the nights are cold (around 17oC), so it is quite attractive to stay in bed a little bit longer. And then there is the problem of which shower to use. My house/office has three floors and on every one of them is a little bathroom (toilet, shower and sink). The bathroom downstairs is used by the staff. I usually use the bathroom connected to my bedroom as the toilet and then I use the bathroom upstairs as my shower. But my “toilet” has a warm water shower and that electrical heating system doesn’t work upstairs. So this week I was in doubt every morning what to do: empty my toilet and sink, making everything wet and dirty or take a quick COLD shower upstairs.
This morning I started with a warm shower. So the first action of the day was drying and cleaning my toilet. Then breakfast: homemade yogurt with banana and muesli. I eat my breakfast while watching the 8 o’clock Dutch news.
At 8 the rest of the staff comes in and we always start with a little meeting. Everyone tells each other what they are planning to do that day. If needed I will remind them of the things they miss and if their day is too boring (with just one or two tasks) I will also tell them to add some other tasks…. But they know this by now.
For me the day started with answering some emails and doing some administration. Then I made a tour through the city, collecting money from an order that we delivered earlier this week and buying a few more items for Anja. Today Eddy, a friend of Marco, is going home, and he is willing to bring some stuff back to Bergen op Zoom. Anja needs a constant supply of scarfs, fragrance-oil, coconut bowls, etc to sell to support Phat’s schools.
At 1 o’clock I had lunch with Eddy and Marco at the J&R Waffle Bar. They did not see my little selling place at the bar yet, so it was about time…… and the lunch was delicious as ever.
After lunch I took some time to guide Soka in making a test for her English class and we discussed the schedule for the Christmas fair this weekend. Then we “the ladies” took off to set up our booth. It was fun doing it together but there was just a little issue with the table cover.

At 5 the market was officially open. This evening was my shift. Tomorrow morning it’s Soka’s turn.
Het is vrijdag vandaag en de meest belangrijke activiteit is om onze kraam op de kerstmarkt in het Victoria hotel gereed te maken. De markt start om 5 uur dus is er ook tijd voor wat andere zaken.
Normaal gesproken ben ik rond 6 uur wakker, maar deze hele week is het koud geweest. Het was ’s nachts ca. 17oC en dan is het lekker om je ’s ochtends nog een keer om te draaien. Vervolgens is er dan het dillema welke douche te nemen. Mijn huis/kantoor heeft 3 verdiepingen en op iedere verdieping is er een kleine badkamer: WC, douche en wastafel. De badkamer beneden wordt gebruikt door de medewerkers. I gebruik normaal gesproken de badkamer bij mijn slaapkamer als wc en dan is de badkamer boven mijn douche. Maar “mijn toilet” heeft een warm-water-douche en de electrische waterverwarmer boven werkt niet. Dus heb ik deze week iedere ochtend in dubio gestaan welke te gebruiken, het toilet leeg te maken te douchen en dan alles droog te maken of snel een koude douche boven.
Vanochtend koos ik voor een warme douche. Dus de eerste actie was het schoon- en droogmaken van mijn toilet naderhand. Mijn ontbijt bestond ook vandaag uit eigengemaakte yoghurt met banaan en muesli en ik eet dat ontbijt meestal terwijl ik het Nederlandse 8 uur journaal kijk (dat is dan een paar uur oud).
Om 8 uur zijn de medewerkers binnen en we starten de werkdag altijd met een korte bespreking. Iedereen vertelt de ander wat ze van plan zij te gaan doen die dag. Als het nodig is herinner ik ze als ze taken vergeten te noemen en als hun dag te saai is (met maar 1 of 2 taken) dan vraag ik ze daar iets aan toe te voegen….. maar intussen weet iedereen dat wel.
Voor mij bestond deze werkdag eerst uit het beantwoorden van wat emails en een beetje administratie. Daarna heb ik een rondje gedaan door de stad. Ik moest nog geld innen van een order eerder deze week en ik moest nog wat laatste dingetjes kopen voor Anja. Vanavond vertrekt Eddy, een vriend van Marco, en die wil wel het een en ander meenemen naar Bergen op Zoom. De verlanglijst van Anja houdt nooit op. Met de verkoop van deze sjaals, geurolie, kokosnoten bakjes en dergelijke sponsort zij de schooltjes van Phat.
Om 1 uur had ik voor de lunch afgesproken met Eddy en Marco in de J&R Waffle bar. Zij hadden mijn kleine “winkeltje” nog niet gezien, dus dat werd tijd…. en de lunch was weer heerlijk.
Na de lunch heb ik wat tijd besteed aan het begeleiden van Soka die een Engelse test aan het maken was voor haar klas en we hebben het schema van de kerstmarkt doorgesproken. Toen zijn wij, de dames, naar het Victoria hotel gegaan om ons kraampje op te bouwen. Het was leuk om dat samen te doen maar er was wel een klein dingetje met het tafelkleed.

Om 5 uur was de markt officieel open. Deze avond was het mijn beurt. Morgen zijn de eerste uren voor Soka.
