A few months ago, to be more specific, after the big WIG-Christmas-fair in Phnom Penh last November, I got a mail from Mrs. Tami. She is an Italian lady and member of WIG (women international group). She obviously was impressed by our products and she wanted to donate some of our games to a little school on the edge of Phnom Penh city. She had just visited the school and wanted to contribute with some school materials.
For me this was the best request. We sell our products for the full price but they still end up at the place with the poorest kids, where they can have the most effect. So I offered her to bring the games personally or with my staff, so that we could add a small training/workshop to make sure they understand how to apply them in their school.
And so I went with a big suitcase full of Panha Sabay stuff to Phnom Penh and to that specific school. The trip to the school was a special challenge. They do have a sort of addresses in Phnom Penh, but the city is growing so fast that most tuktuk drivers do not know the new addresses and numbers are definitely not unambiguously or predictable. Further more the roads were not finished which made it even harder. Fortunately I had the phone number of the school director and the tuktuk driver used that for directions several times. He also asked many people on the street and that’s how we finally found the school.
It was a remarkable little school, located in a narrow house. The classrooms were very tiny but they did have a nice open general space, also small but big enough for little group activities. Every day 100 kids come to this school, most of them do not attend public school for several reasons. But here they do get free lessons. Besides that the kids can stay the whole day, which is good because many mothers work in the garment industry. There are many clothing-factories in this area.
When the kids were able to do something for themselves I got time with the 4 young teachers to give them instructions on how to use the games in their lessons and library. It was not a long extended training but they were very interested and I did test if they understood the way Leng is played. Now just hope that they are going to use it. This is definitely a location where Leng can add a lot of extra value because a lot of kids are present in the library / general space part of the day. By the way I also gave them a bag with 75 books from the former PDC library. They can do their positive work in that library as well.
Luckily I got the chance on Thursday to thank Mrs. Tami in person for this great gift. She was happy with my pictures and report and she told me she wants me to do the same thing for a different project when I’m back in Phnom Penh again. So this is to be continued.
Een paar maand geleden, om precies te zijn snel na de grote WIG-Christmas-fair in Phnom Penh afgelopen november kreeg ik een mailtje van Mevr. Tami. Zij is Italiaanse en lid van WIG (women international group). Zij liet duidelijk blijken onder de indruk te zijn van onze producten en zij wilde graag een aantal van onze spellen doneren aan een klein schooltje aan de rand van Phnom Penh. Zij was er net geweest en wilde het schooltje graag ondersteunen met schoolspullen.
Voor mij was dit het beste verzoek. Wij verkopen onze producten maar ze komen wel terecht bij de armste Cambodjanen, daar waar ze het meeste effect kunnen genereren. Ik bood haar dan ook aan de spellen zelf of met behulp van mijn medewerkers af te leveren, zodat we ook de gelegenheid hadden om ze uit te leggen en aan te geven hoe je ze kunt toepassen op school.
En zo ben ik afgelopen week met een koffer vol met Panha Sabay spellen naar Phnom Penh en het bewuste schooltje gegaan. Die tocht naar het schooltje was een uitdaging op zich. In Phnom Penh hebben ze wel een soort van adressen, maar de stad groeit zo snel dat tuktuk chauffeurs de nieuwe adressen niet kennen en de nummering is ook zeker niet eenduidig of voorspelbaar. En dan zijn de wegen naar zo’n adres ook allemaal maar half af, wat het nog ingewikkelder maakt. Gelukkig had ik een telefoonnummer van de directeur en daar heeft de tuktuk chauffeur gretig gebruik van gemaakt. Ook heeft hij verschillende mensen onderweg aangesproken en zo hebben we uiteindelijk het schooltje gevonden.
Het was een bijzonder schooltje, gehuisvest in een smal huis. De lokaaltjes waren heel klein maar ze hebben wel een gezellige ruimte beneden die groot genoeg is voor kleine groepsactiviteiten. 100 jonge kinderen gaan iedere dag naar dit schooltje; de meeste van hen gaan niet naar Public School om verschillende redenen. Maar via dit gratis schooltje krijgen ze toch onderwijs. Bovendien mogen de kinderen er de hele dag blijven, wat fijn is voor de moeders die vaak lange dagen in textielfabrieken werken. Want het schooltje staat in een wijk waar veel grote kledingfabrieken staan.
Toen de kinderen wat voor zichzelf gingen doen, kreeg ik tijd om de 4 jonge leerkrachten instructies te geven hoe de spellen kunnen inzetten in hun lessen en in de bibiotheek. Het was geen uitvoerige training maar ze vonden het duidelijk interessant en ik heb kunnen vaststellen dat ze het principe van Leng begrepen. Nu maar hopen dat het goed gaat worden gebruikt. Dit is wel bij uitstek een plek waar Leng goed kan werken omdat veel kinderen veel tijd doorbrengen in die gemeenschappelijk ruimte annex bibliotheek. Ik heb trouwens ook namens het PDC een tas met ca. 75 boeken uit hun voormalige bibliotheek gedoneerd. Ook daar kunnen ze hun voordeel mee doen.
Ik heb gelukkig donderdag mevrouw Tami persoonlijk kunnen bedanken voor deze geweldige donatie. Ook zij was blij met de foto’s en mijn verslag en het ziet er dan ook naar uit dat ik de volgende keer als ik in Phnom Penh ben namens haar ook spelletjes op een ander project mag leveren. Wordt dus vervolgd.
