And before you know it we have entered May. Not a lot has happened these past weeks. As everyone else I was mainly in and around my house. Doing some grocery shopping was often the only reason to go out of the house. Although I did cycle a lot as well. We had some really hot days, so keeping calm was (besides the cycling) the best way to do in general.
About Corona not much has happened in Cambodia. According to the official numbers there were 122 people infected (the last one was a few weeks ago). At first I was surprised and I could hardly believe it. Even more because we had a lot of Chinese tourists in January and February.
But I see more and more articles with arguments why the corona-virus is not striking hard here.
The main argument (or at least a proven one) is the low density of people in this country. Phnom Penh is a big busy town but even there the density is not comparable with cities like Bangkok. There’s also hardly any public transportation system with all the crowds that go with it. People travel mostly by moto’s (although you see more and more cars too) and by tuktuks; this means traveling individually or in very small groups.
Most people live in small villages and cities. Also people live outdoors, that’s helpful too.
And then there’s the climate (especially in these months): high temperatures, a lot of sunlight and high humidity. Studies are still ongoing but it seems like a positive cocktail to prevent the virus from spreading easily.
Is there no corona-problem then in Cambodia? Certainly, there’s a big problem, especially in Siem Reap. Because they’re no tourists a lot of people are out of jobs and without any income. Also the garment industry is in trouble. And if you then also realize that Cambodia is a country with the highest amount of personal loans, you can imagine how big the financial problems are for a lot of people.
I was able to pay the salaries of my employees in March and April, but now that we have this situation, I think it is ok to ask something back for that again.
Since May 4th we have started up again at half power. Employees are coming to the office in a set schedule two days a week. We have adjusted our activities; focusing mostly on study and developing new products and activities. I have the feeling that everybody is happy to have some structure again. I notice that it is also easier for me to feel motivated when you are not alone.

En voordat je er erg in hebt zitten we alweer in mei. Er is niet zoveel gebeurd de afgelopen weken. Zoals een ieder van jullie ben ik vooral in en om mijn huis geweest. Boodschappen doen was zo ongeveer het enige uitje in april. Hoewel ik ook aardig wat kilometers gefietst heb de afgelopen weken. Het was warm bij vlagen, dus rustig aandoen (buiten dat fietsen dan) was in alle opzichten het beste.
Wat betreft carona is er in Cambodja heel erg weinig gebeurd. Volgens de officiele cijfers zijn er 122 besmettingen geweest (en de laatste was al enkele weken geleden). Ik heb me er in eerste instantie heel erg over verbaasd, kon het nauwelijks geloven. Juist omdat we hier in januari en februari zoveel Chinese toeristen hadden.
Maar er komen steeds meer berichten die beargumenteren waarom het hier zo rustig is gebleven.
Belangrijkste argument (of in ieder geval een bewezen argument) is de lage bevolkingsdichtheid. Phnom Penh is een grote drukke stad maar zelfs daar is de dichtheid niet te vergelijken met steden als Bangkok. We hebben hier bijvoorbeeld ook geen uitgebreid openbaar vervoer netwerk. Mensen reizen nog steeds vooral op brommers (hoewel ook steeds meer auto’s) en met tuktuks, maar dus individueel of in hele kleine groepjes.
De meeste mensen wonen hier in kleine dorpjes en steden. Veel mensen leven buiten en ook dat is een gunstige omstandigheid.
En dan is er het klimaat (vooral in deze maanden): hoge temperaturen, veel zonlicht en een hoge luchtvochtigheid. De studies zijn nog gaande maar het lijkt erop dat dit de best mogelijke cocktail is om het verspreiden van het corona virus moeilijk te maken.
Heeft Cambodja dan geen corona-probleem? Zeker wel, we hebben hier een groot probleem, vooral in Siem Reap. Doordat het toerisme helemaal is stil gevallen zijn er enorm veel mensen zonder inkomen. Maar ook de textiel industrie bijvoorbeeld heeft het heel erg moeilijk nu. En als je dan bedenkt dat Cambodja het land is met de hoogste persoonlijke leningen last, dan weet je dat de financiele nood heel erg groot is hier.
Ik heb mijn medewerkers in Maart en April door kunnen betalen, maar nu de situatie is zoals hij is, denk ik dat het verantwoord is, daar ook weer wat voor terug te vragen.
Sinds 4 mei zijn we weer opgestart zij het op halve kracht. De medewerkers komen in een vast schema 2 dagen per week werken. De werkzaamheden zijn wel wat aangepast; we richten ons veel op studie en het ontwikkelen van nieuwe activiteiten en producten. Ik heb het gevoel dat iedereen blij is dat er weer wat van ze wordt gevraagd, en ik merk aan mezelf dat het ook makkelijker is om de motivatie weer te vinden als je hier niet alleen zit.
Dus we zijn weer begonnen en dat betekent dat ik jullie ook vast weer meer nieuws kan melden de komende periode. Houd de website in de gaten.
