We have produced the first puzzles of “Roopkom” and that means that we can launch. Because it is also welcome to start earning a bit of money we developed first a souvenir/gift-version of Roopkom. But of course the kids-version to play and learn (Khmer) from will follow as soon as possible.
As we stated in our mission, we want to use recycled materials wherever possible. This is a good idea for two reasons, the material is cheap and we are helping to reduce the amount of waste. We make Roopkom from used water bottles and you can find many of them lying around everywhere. By the way that is another challenge, how do we collect them?
We prefer not to get them out of the city (here waste is already collected and transported to Thailand and Vietnam for further recycling). But in the countryside there is no garbage-collection-service so the problem is bigger there.
We are working on the idea to involve children. On one hand it is a good way to create awareness and hopefully change their behavior. On the other hand, they often receive free English lessons and now they can do something back. We want to create a collection place at these free schools. Students can bring the bottles they see on the way to school. The good ones (intact) we can use to produce Roopkom; the rest (very dirty or damaged) we can bring to those waste-collection-places, where you receive a small reimbursement. Something that any school can use. By the way, this is all still theory, but we want to try out with Stepping Stones and Phat’s schools.

We hebben de eerste exemplaren van “Roopkom” gemaakt en dat betekent dat we nu echt de markt op kunnen. Omdat het zo langzamerhand ook wel welkom is om wat inkomsten te genereren, hebben we eerst een souvenir/cadeau-versie van Roopkom ontwikkeld. Maar natuurlijk volgt er zo snel mogelijk ook de versie waar het uiteindelijk om gaat, namelijk een leuke puzzel waar je (Khmer) van kunt leren.
Zoals we in onze missie al stellen, willen we waar mogelijk gebruik maken van gebruikte materialen. Dat is handig omdat dat de producten goedkoper maakt, maar het betekent ook dat we iets van de enorme rommel hier op kunnen gaan ruimen. Roopkom wordt gemaakt van gebruikte waterflesjes en daar liggen er duizenden van in de berm. Overigens is dat nog wel een tweede uitdaging, het verzamelen van die flesjes?
We willen ze liever niet uit de stad halen (hier worden ze namelijk al verzameld om naar Thailand of Vietnam te worden gebracht voor recycling) Echter op het platteland is er geen enkele vuil-ophaal-dienst dus daar is het probleem groter.
Het idee is nu om er zoveel mogelijk kinderen bij te betrekken. Het is enerzijds een goede manier om kinderen bewust te maken hoe om te gaan met afval. Maar op veel plekken krijgen kinderen gratis Engelse les en daar kunnen ze nu iets voor terug doen. De goede flesjes (intact) kunnen wij gebruiken voor Roopkom. De gedeukte of heel smerige flesjes kunnen naar de verzamel plekken voor recycling, waar er ook nog een kleine vergoeding tegenover staat. Die vergoeding is dan weer voor de betreffende school. Overigens is dit nu nog theorie; maar we willen dit zo snel mogelijk opstarten, te beginnen bij Stepping Stones en Phat’s schools.
We hebben nog veel te doen, maar het voelt wel goed om nu echt iets “in de winkel” te hebben. Mocht je trouwens interesse hebben in een “Roopkom”, laat het ons dan weten via het contactformulier. Als er meerdere (genoeg) belangstellenden zijn, zouden we een pakketje kunnen vullen en opsturen.
