At the end of the year it is always nice and good to look back at what happened in the past year. At first I thought it was not a lot in this year but if you put it all in a list:
- We learned how we could turn irrigation tubes into Leng playing boards. We can still make improvements on the production, but we are able to make them and we did produce a reasonable amount already.
- We made an English version of Roopkom Kids and a second (more difficult) version of TorTor. The first, Roopkom Kids English, is a success. But there hasn’t been a lot of interest on that second TorTor (yet).
- With a lot of help of Sitha, we created a new website. This one has more options for the future, so we are very happy with it.
- I was able to celebrate the 80st birthday of mum in The Netherlands. It was good to be “home” again for a few weeks.
- We’ve developed a product for the hospitality business. With Roopkom Thom restaurants and hotels can entertain kids at the table. It’s a lot of work to make a Roopkom Thom because a game contains 27 blocks. But we have sold quite a few of them and they provide brand awareness too.
- We have our own shop. Well that is, we have a few square meters in the J&R Waffle Bar. It’s very nice to be able to cooperate on several things now.
- For starters we have organized 3 workshops together in the J&R Waffle Bar.
- And with these last bullet points we automatically focus more on sales and marketing now. The last weeks we participated in 5 Christmas fairs for instance.
- By going out more, we can see that our network is growing pretty fast.
- We have a promotion video for Panha Sabay. It’s made by Chorn and Chhen under guidance of Ilse. They need to work a little on the sound but it will be “out” soon.
- I’m not keeping exact records but I did bike over 2000 km in the last year and had several interesting conversations with my Sorasus friends while biking.
- And I am very proud of the personal development achieved by Vutey, Neen, Chorn, Soka and Chhen. They still learn every day but every one of them made a big progress this year.
Was there no negativity in 2019 then?
- There were a few financial setbacks, unexpected costs often related to the fact that the quality of most things is not the same as we are used to.
- I cannot seem to get used to the fact that almost everybody needs to be reminded that you are waiting for an answer. In the Netherlands this also doesn’t work well all the time but it is very bad here. If I send out a mail, I write a reminder a week later in my diary automatically, but one reminder is hardly ever enough.
- The flood (or should I say waterfall) in my house mid-August was a huge setback. We lost a lot of final products and it was a lot of work to sort and dry everything. Actually we are still working on that. Fortunately the root cause has been addressed so it cannot happen again, at least not in the same way.
- And last but not least we are trying to get a new improved shredder for half a year now. This one is specifically built to shred the irrigation tubes, but it is still not 100%. Luckily the builder is a patient man and in the meantime he is working on version 3. Hopefully this one is working well because that would mean we can start up the production again in January. And then we can also finally start up the new melting machine that my brother Erik built for us.
Zo aan het einde van het jaar is het altijd fijn en goed om terug te kijken naar wat er allemaal is gebeurd het afgelopen jaar. In eerste instantie leek het niet zoveel, maar als je het op een rijtje zet:
- We leerden hoe je van irrigatie slangen Leng-speel-borden kunt maken. Overigens is dit proces nog niet uitontwikkeld, er zijn nog verschillende mogelijkheden om de productie van speelborden te verbeteren, maar we kunnen ze maken en er is inmiddels een aardig voorraadje geproduceerd.
- We maakten een Engelse versie van Roopkom Kids en een tweede (moeilijker) versie van TorTor. De eerste, Roopkom Kids Engels, is succesvol. Voor de tweede TorTor is tot nu toe weinig belangstelling.
- Er is, met heel veel hulp van Sitha, een nieuwe website gemaakt. Deze heeft voor de toekomst meer mogelijkheden dus daar zijn we heel blij mee.
- Ik heb de 80e verjaardag van mams in Nederland mee kunnen maken. Het was fijn om weer een paar weken “thuis” te zijn.
- We hebben een product ontwikkeld voor de horeca. Met Roopkom Thom kunnen restaurants en hotels kinderen entertainen aan tafel. Het is veel werk om Roopkom Thom te maken want er zitten maar liefst 27 blokken in 1 spel. Maar er zijn er al een flink aantal verkocht en dat levert extra naamsbekendheid op.
- We hebben ons eigen winkeltje, dat wil zeggen een aantal vierkante meters in de J&R Waffle Bar. Het is ook leuk om op sommige punten nu samen te kunnen werken.
- Zo hebben we inmiddels al 3 workshops gehouden in de J&R Waffle Bar.
- En met deze laatste punten zijn we ons ook meer en meer aan het richten op marketing en sales. Zo hebben we de afgelopen weken deelgenomen aan 5 kerstmarkten.
- En door meer “naar buiten” te gaan is ons netwerk ook snel aan het groeien.
- We hebben een promotiefilm voor Panha Sabay, gemaakt door Chorn en Chhen onder begeleiding van Ilse. Ze moeten nog een beetje sleutelen aan het geluid maar binnenkort zal ie te bewonderen zijn.
- Ik houd het niet precies bij maar ik heb dit jaar ruim 2000km gefietst en ondertussen hele leuke gesprekken gevoerd met mijn Sorasus vrienden.
- En dan ben ik reuze trots op de ontwikkeling die Vutey, Neen, Chorn, Soka en Chhen hebben doorgemaakt. Ze leren nog iedere dag maar in het afgelopen jaar hebben ze allemaal op hun eigen wijze enorme vooruitgang geboekt.
Waren er dan geen negatieve dingen? Zeker wel
- Er waren een paar financiele tegenvallers, onverwachte kosten die toch vaak te maken hebben met de mindere kwaliteit van veel dingen hier.
- Ik kan maar niet wennen aan het feit dat je bijna iedereen meerdere keren moet herinneren aan het feit dat je op een antwoord wacht. In Nederland gaat dat ook niet vanzelf, maar hier is het echt heel ernstig. Als ik een mail uitstuur, schrijf ik al direct een reminder in mijn agenda een ruime week later, maar 1 reminder is zelden voldoende.
- De overstroming (of moet ik zeggen waterval) in mijn huis midden augustus was een enorme tegenvaller. We zijn veel eindproducten verloren en het was een enorme klus om alles droog te krijgen en uit te zoeken. Daar zijn we tot heden nog steeds mee bezig. Gelukkig is de oorzaak wel aangepakt; dat gebeurt ons niet weer, althans niet op dezelfde manier.
- En dan zijn we inmiddels al een half jaar bezig om een nieuwe shredder aan de praat te krijgen. Deze is specifiek gebouwd om irrigatieslangen te verwerken, maar het functioneert nog steeds niet optimaal. Gelukkig is de bouwer heel geduldig; hij is inmiddels bezig met de derde versie. We hopen met zijn allen dat deze goed werkt want dan kunnen we eindelijk in januari weer aan de slag en dan kunnen we ook die fantastische machine van Erik, mijn broer, in gebruik gaan nemen.
