Development areas
Playing Rolum means learning digits, understanding that 1 – 6 are the same as ១ – ៦ (just another way of writing). It also teaches counting, ordering, subitizing, and cardinality—all valuable skills in early math. Building a tower with blocks that are lightweight and not 100% square is a task that will help train motor skills. Making a puzzle will improve the children’s cognition and visual spatial reasoning. To put the blocks together in the right way requires concentration, and it improves short-term memory and problem solving.
How to play
Six blocks contain numbers in Khmer and English; each block has four sides with parts of pictures. These blocks need to end up in a vertical tower with number 1 at the top. Roll the dice (there are 2 different dice in the box), and the number you roll is the number you can add to the tower. If the number is already in the tower, you cannot add. Play until the tower is complete or… until it drops.
