There are some rumors that this lockdown is going to be extended until May 5th. I really hope that that is not going to happen. Even though I’m ok for now with this situation, 2 weeks will be more than enough, I’m sure. The thing that I really start to miss is cycling. Usually I go out on the bike 2 times a week. It’s refreshing to do something physical at the end of the day or in the weekend and it is great to get out of the city and see the countryside. Siem Reap is not that big, so you are out of the city in no time. And then you have a number of options. We sometimes go to Tonle Sap Lake, which is a huge lake in the middle of the country, we also sometimes go north where it’s more agriculture area and where the Angkor Wat area is. And then there’s the option to go to or around West Baray. West Baray is an artificial lake, made in the Angkor time. Basically it was a reservoir of water. It’s beautiful there and in any season the off roads are a nice challenge with the mountain bike.
Er gaan geruchten dat deze lockdown wordt verlengd naar 5 Mei. Ik hoop werkelijk dat dat niet gaat gebeuren. Ook al ben ik ok met de situatie nu, 2 weken is meer dan genoeg. Wat ik nu al mis is fietsen. Normaal gesproken fiets ik gemiddeld 2 keer in de week. Het is lekker om aan het eind van de dag of in het weekend wat beweging te hebben en het is geweldig om de stad uit te gaan. Siem Reap is niet heel erg groot en er zijn een aantal opties qua fietsroutes. Soms gaan we richting Tonle Sap, een geweldig groot meer in het midden van het land (een beetje als het IJsselmeer). Soms gaan we meer noordelijk waar het vooral landbouwgebied is en waar ook het Angkor park ligt. En dan is er de mogelijkheid om riching of rond West Baray te gaan. West Baray is een kunstmatig meer, gegraven in de Angkor tijd. Het functioneerde als reservoir en is dat eigenlijk nog steeds. Het is er prachtig en in ieder seizoen zijn de kleine weggetjes rond het meer een leuke uitdaging met de mountain bike.
